Weekly Study: Ephesians 5

Welcome to our weekly study of the Bible!

What you will find below is a simple Bible study guide. Of course, it isn’t the only method for studying the Bible, but rather a helpful, simple structure to follow along with.

The intent is really for you to be able to go along with these steps, and then bring what you have learned, or what you have found to be the most important or meaningful, to one of the Adult Bible Study, Life Group, or Life Transformation Group times that are taking place through the English Worship.

These next few weeks will consist of going through the book of Ephesians, this week with Chapter 5, with the goal of helping each other to be in the Bible and reading God’s words each day:

EPHESIANS 5

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.b 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:

“Wake up, O sleeper,

rise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.”

15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives and Husbands

22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”b 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

The Three Simple Steps:
Prepare – Study – Respond

Prepare
(Pray Every Day)
  • Before reading the passage, take a moment to pause in prayer.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you today, to soften your heart and mind, and to be able to focus.
  • What persons, events, or other ideas pop into your mind during this time? What is grabbing at your attention at the moment?  Feel free to write them down on a piece of paper. (This will help you to set these things aside for a moment so that you can read the Bible and hear what God is saying.)
  • You may also choose to write down a word that describes how you are feeling about those things that are grabbing at your attention.
  • You can also reflect back on the day before and how you felt and what happened by writing one sentence that starts with “Yesterday…”  ( This will help you to take notice of how you are doing and feeling emotionally and continues to help prepare you to read and hear what God is saying.)
Study
(Understanding)

Steps to Follow Each Day:

  • Scan over and read the whole chapter to get an overall sense of what it is talking about.
  • Go back and read it again and pay attention to patterns or verses that draw your attention.
  • Write down what you observed and any questions you may have.
  • Circle or underline any words that really stick out to you.
  • Draw a box around any key directional / explanation words (words that help to really tell you what is going on and in what way: because, so that, therefore, etc.)

Day One: Read Chapter 5 (and a 1-4 overview). Now go back and follow the above guidelines. Write down any key verses or questions that seem to stand out to you.

Day Two: Read Chapter 5. Now go back and focus on Ephesians 5:1-7. What verse(s) stood out to you? Go back and meditate on them. Write it down. Think about this all day.

Day Three: Read Chapter 5. Now go back and focus on Ephesians 5:8-20. What were we and what are we now? Write out the contrast (differences) between those in Darkness versus those in the Light. How do this apply to you–today?

Day Four: Read Chapter 5. Now go back and focus on Ephesians 5:21. What does it mean to “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ? Ponder on these verses all day. Ask how can you apply this to you–today?

Day Five: Read Chapter 5. Now focus on Ephesians 5:22-33. In light of the principle, “we are to submit one to another,” write out how husbands and wives are to love each other.

Day Six: Review your journal of Chapter 5. How can this chapter change your Upward relationship with Father God, your Inward relationship with yourself, and your Outward relationships with others? Write down specific verse(s) where the Spirit of God is asking you to change. If more than one, then choose one specific outward behavior you want to change.

Day Seven: Sunday Review of Chapter 5.

Respond
(Apply)

In reflecting on the reading for each day, ask yourself these questions:

– Lord, what were you saying through this Chapter?

– Lord, what are you saying to me today?

– Where/How is Jesus present in these verses, and what truth about Himself is God reminding me of?

– How should I respond to this truth? What direction are you giving me? What action should I take?

Life Group

If you are a part of a Life Group, talk about chapter 5.

Confess your area of weakness that the Spirit is asking you to change.

Share why and how you think you are to apply this to your life.
