Go Deeper: Like Sheep Without a Shepherd

What is this?

Life is all about the cross. It’s about connecting to God by faith (↕) and growing to be more and more like Him. And it’s about connecting to others with God and His love (↔) so that they can experience His love and know Him.

This weekly paper is something you can use alone and with a Life Group. It is made to help you grow in your relationship with God, as well as in your reflection of God to those around you.

01 Individually

On your own, read John 1:35-42. As you read…

  • Look for one main idea and message for your life in Christ that you can hold onto.
  • Write down 1 or 2 things you learned from these words about God and about us.
  • Take a few moments to pray.  Ask God to help you apply this passage of Scripture to your daily life.

02 In Community

God wants all to be saved and come to a knowledge of Him (1 Timothy 2:3-4).   God uses people like you and me to help connect people to Jesus so that they can have and enjoy a relationship with God – a relationship that is going to last forever!

We need a heart like Jesus’s in order to be used by Him. Take time now to have someone read Luke 15:1-32 and then have each person share what they consider to be the most significant parts of this story to them.

In verse 15:1 it said that “tax collectors and sinners” were gathering around Jesus.  These people, even though they were nothing like Jesus, still liked Jesus!  What does that say about Jesus? Why was Jesus comfortable being around tax collectors and sinners – or in other words, unbelievers?

Read Matthew 9:9-13, and Luke 19:1-10.  Do these verses help explain why Jesus spent time with them?

Read Matthew 9:35-38.  How did Jesus feel about people being like “sheep without a shepherd?”

If there is time, read Luke 10:1-20.  Discuss these words of Scripture in light of everything else that has been discussed so far.

Take some time to close your gathering with a time of prayer. Along with other prayer requests that may have come up from the study, please pray about the following:

  • Pray that like the disciples in Luke 10:1-20, we too will be powerful witnesses for Jesus and see Him working through us.
  • Pray for a greater compassion and love for those who do not know Jesus.
  • Pray for people you know, by name, who need the truth of God’s love in their lives and the knowledge of Jesus as their Savior.
  • Pray for your neighborhood and the people who live around you.  Pray for homes, marriages, and families.
