Go Deeper: Hope

What is this?

Life is all about the cross. It’s about connecting to God by faith (↕) and growing to be more and more like Him. And it’s about connecting to others with God and His love (↔) so that they can experience His love and know Him.
This weekly paper is something you can use alone and with a Life Group. It is made to help you grow in your relationship with God, as well as in your reflection of God to those around you.

01 Individually

On your own, read Psalm 33. As you read…

  • Look for one main idea and message for your life in Christ that you can hold onto.
  • Write down 1 or 2 things you learned from these words about God and about us.
  • Take a few moments to pray.  Ask God to help you apply this passage of Scripture to your daily life.

02 In Community

As you start your gathering, have each person share about a time they felt hopeful, even if things were very difficult at the time.

Now share prayer requests and have someone lead an opening prayer around those requests.

Take a few minutes to talk about a definition of “hope.”  What do you think hope is?

God is clear in His Word that He wants us to have hope in our lives, and to live as hope-filled people.  Read the following Bible passages and discuss what they teach about God’s desire for us to have hope.

  •    Jeremiah 29:11-13
  •    Romans 8:24-28
  •    1 Timothy 6:17-19
  •    Titus 3:3-7
  •    Hebrews 4:14-16
  •    1 Peter 3:15

Often when we face difficulty or pain, we react defensively, instead of trusting God.  Talk about the three ways listed below that we may react and cope with difficulty. How do these affect us and our relationships?

  1. We accuse God or other people of causing our pain.
  2. We pretend we don’t have any part in bringing pain upon ourselves or others.
  3. We intentionally hurt ourselves or others in reaction to what we are going through.

God never wastes our pain.  What do the following verses teach about how God is working to bring good out of our trials and difficulties?

  •    Romans 5:1-5
  •    1 Peter 1:3-9

Close your gathering with prayer. Along with other prayer requests that may have come up from the study, please pray about the following:

  • Pray for the whole world to have hope in Jesus in the midst of suffering and fears for the future.
  • Pray for relationships and families in our church as well as for single believers
  • Pray for those who are struggling to believe in God, or to believe in Jesus, and pray for people you know, by name, who need Jesus and His love in their lives.
