Go Deeper: True Value

What is this?

Life is all about the cross. It’s about connecting to God by faith (↕) and growing to be more and more like Him. And it’s about connecting to others with God and His love (↔) so that they can experience His love and know Him.

This weekly paper is something you can use alone and with a Life Group. It is made to help you grow in your relationship with God, as well as in your reflection of God to those around you.

01 Individually

On your own, read Psalm 139:1-16. As you read…

  • Look for one main idea and message for your life in Christ that you can hold onto.
  • Write down 1 or 2 things you learned from these words about God and about us.
  • Take a few moments to pray.  Ask God to help you apply this passage of Scripture to your daily life.

02 In Community

Two of the greatest needs we all have, are to be accepted, and to be valued; in other words, to be loved. What words or phrases do we use in English or Chinese to talk about a person’s “value”?

What are some ways that our culture determines someone else’s value? What’s good, and what’s bad, about those ways of determining value?

Have someone lead an opening prayer asking God to guide your study and discussion

Have someone read Mark 10:13-16.  Talk about how Jesus “blessed” the little children.  What does it mean that He blessed them, and why do you think “blessing” someone is so powerful? How did Jesus’s view of the children differ from others?

Now have someone read Psalm 139:1-16.  What do these words have to say about a person’s inherent value?  What value does God give to people? (This includes you!)

Read James 2:1-13.  What do these words have to say about a person’s value and about acceptance?

Have someone read Romans 15:7, and Colossians 3:12-17.  What do these words of Scripture add to what you have already been discussing?

All of these readings remind us of our value before God but also the value of everyone in the world. Talk about times you find this hard to accept. When is it tempting to judge other people as less valuable? When is it hard to see yourself as having great value in God’s eyes? What people are less valued in our society but very valuable to God?

Take some time to close your gathering with a time of prayer. Along with other prayer requests that may have come up from the study, please pray about the following:

  • Pray that each person in your group will come to see clearly how much God values and accepts them.
  • Pray to have God’s eyes to see and value other people the way that God does.
  • Pray that God would make the homes and families of our congregation strong and healthy.
  • Pray for those who are struggling to believe in God, or to believe in Jesus, and pray for people you know, by name, who need Jesus and His love in their lives.
