English Worship 3.7

This is the day that the Lord has made – Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Lenten Theme: From Death | To Life

It is during this time of the year that we pay special attention to our need for Jesus. Without him we are lost. Without him we are in the dark. We are spiritually dead. However, with him we have life, because He gave his life for us. This is a time and a season of repentance as we reflect on our status before God. Without Jesus we would be dead, but in Him we have life. We take this time to reflect and repent as the time grows closer and closer to the death of Jesus and then to the celebration of His resurrection on Easter.

Theme for the Week:

What difference does your faith make in your behavior?  Today in worship, we hear the Ten Commandments and know that we cannot fulfill them.  We also hear Jesus replace any system of behavior with his own life and love.  Only by his action can we behave in ways that bring blessing to this world.

Bible Readings

Exodus 20:1-17

1And God spoke all these words:

2″I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

3″You shall have no other gods before me.

4″You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7″You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

8″Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12″Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

13″You shall not murder.

14″You shall not commit adultery.

15″You shall not steal.

16″You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

17″You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

1 Corinthians 1:18-31

18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

19For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;

the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

20Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

26Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things–and the things that are not–to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. 30It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God–that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

John 2:13-25

13When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”

17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18Then the Jews demanded of him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

20The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

23Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name. 24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. 25He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

Sermon

“I show mercy to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments” (Exodus 20:6)

Prayer

Spend some time in prayer with our Heavenly Father. He asks us to pray, to talk with Him. Like a father and his child. Bring to Him your problems and your difficult situations. Bring to him your hopes and desires. Praise him and give him thanks for all He’s done. Share your life with him, because He loves you.

Connection Challenge:

Pick one item that stuck out to you from today (a bible verse, a thought from the sermon, a song, something you need to pray for) and share it with one other person. Send them a wechat, video call them, find a way to connect.

Even though we are unable to join in-person on Sundays, we can still find ways to connect and share together in our relationship with God and our relationships with each other.

Go in peace and serve the Lord!
