Go Deeper: Temptation

What is this?

Life is all about the cross. It’s about connecting to God by faith (↕) and growing to be more and more like Him. And it’s about connecting to others with God and His love (↔) so that they can experience His love and know Him.
This weekly paper is something you can use alone and with a Life Group. It is made to help you grow in your relationship with God, as well as in your reflection of God to those around you.

01 Individually

On your own, read Mark 14:32-38. As you read…

  • Look for one main idea and message for your life in Christ that you can hold onto.
  • Write down 1 or 2 things you learned from these words about God and about us.
  • Take a few moments to pray.  Ask God to help you apply this passage of Scripture to your daily life.

02 In Community

Have someone read Psalm 102.  After the Psalm is read, invite those in your group to speak out loud any phrase of verse from the Psalm you just read as a cry for God’s help and strength, or as a way to praise and worship God for what He has done.  Then have someone close this time with prayer.

Share about a time that you were facing a huge obstacle in your life.   Did you overcome it, or did it overcome you?

Now share about a time that you discovered how powerful prayer can be to fight against a certain temptation or evil.

In Exodus 17:8-16, the Israelites faced an impossible obstacle – the Amalekite army.  Have someone read those words.

What was God’s strategy for overcoming the army of the Amalekites?  What did Moses raising his hands up into heaven symbolize?  What was he doing?  Talk about why Aaron and Hur were also instrumental in the success of the Israelites.

Have different people read 1 Peter 5:8-9, 1 Corinthians 10:12-13, and Luke 22:31-32.  What do these Scriptures teach about the reality of evil.   Now have a few more people read Galatians 5:17, Proverbs 1:10, and Romans 13:14.  What are some other sources of evil and temptation according to these verses?

Now have someone read Ephesians 6:10-20.    Talk about these words, and then discuss what connection Paul makes to prayer, and overcoming evil and temptation.

What does Mark 14:38 have to say about prayer and spiritual strength?

Read the following Scriptures, and talk about the encouragement each of them provide.

Psalm 121:7-8

2 Thessalonians 3:3

Acts 14:22

Psalm 91:9-10

2 Corinthians 12:9

Take some time to close your New Life Gathering with a time of prayer.  Along with other prayer requests that may have come up from the study, please pray about the following:

  • Pray for all the different groups that are a part of English Worship. Pray that God would use these groups to help us share God’s love and power with our neighborhood.
  • Pray, by name, for people you know who are trying to live life without the power of God because they do not know God and His Son. Pray that God opens their heart to Him, and that He opens a door for you to share God’s love with them.
